If ever there was a poster child for childhood trauma, Gohan would be it. Sweet natured and gentle, Gohan is very much like his father(though not nearly so naive). When we first see him, he's a crybaby who's never really had to do anything on his own. His training with Piccolo and the battle with Nappa and Vegeta pretty much fix that. Gohan wants both his parents to be proud of him, so he strives to do his best in both his achedemics and his fighting. The battle with Cell forces him to mature fast and causes him to bury his desire to fight. Gohan seems to have almost a split personality. Normally he's a soft-spoken boy who'll do his best to avoid a conflict, but once a battle has begun his saiya-jin blood reigns and he revels in the challenge of battle as much as his father does. As a teenager he slacks off in his training to study more(he does do some fighting as the Great Saiyaman) and this turns to his disadvantage when he does battle with Darbura. After Majin Buu, Gohan settles down into a semi-normal life and appears to have once again given up his training.
