The prince of a dying race, Vegeta has a lot to be angry about. Orphaned at the age of five, he learned to hide his emotions at a very young age. Arrogant even as a child, he still had a great deal of respect for his father, imitating his postures and attitude. Raised under the abusive Frieza, Vegeta was constantly forced to swallow his pride and endure the taunting the tyrant and his lackeys dished out, all for the sake of his two remaining people and a chance at revenge. (*note~the exact nature of the abuse Vegeta endured is still in debate. We know that he was abused, but not the extent.) After being wished back to life and ending up on Chikyuu a bewildered Vegeta found himself with no direction in his life. With Frieza dead and supposedly Goku as well, he was the strongest warrior in the universe. For reasons unexplained, he gave the remaining Z senshi the solution to bringing Goku and Kuririn back to life. Most likely he desired a final conflict with Goku, wanting to have a true victory over the third class saiya-jin. While staying on Chikyuu, Vegeta became a reluctant member of the Z senshi and found a kindred spirit in Bulma. After the Cell games, he remained with Bulma, helping to raise their son Trunks. It isn't until the battle with Majin Buu that we see just how much Vegeta cares for his family and his adopted home planet, Chikyuu. (*note~we also see that he is as protective of Gohan and Goten as he is of Trunks) Here is also where we see his obsession with defeating Goku settle into a semi-friendly rivalry as he finally puts what's really important in life as his top priority. Vegeta doesn't give his loyalties lightly, but when he does, it's for keeps. A powerful ally and a fearsome foe, this dark hero is determined to protect his family and home at all costs.
